First real one.

You already know what this is. So here’s the rhythm, every week from here: one story, one lesson, every Sunday. No fluff. No homework. You read it wherever you are, and you leave a little wiser than you got here.

Let’s go.

I watched a friend close his business last year. Seven years of work, everything he had, gone in a signature. The day he signed the papers he called me and said, “Well. Back to square one.”

I let it sit for a second. Then I told him it wasn’t back to square one.

Not because I’m allergic to a pity party. (I am. But that’s not why.) Because square one is a place you only ever visit once.

Think about the version of him that started that business seven years earlier. That guy didn’t know anything. Didn’t know that the cheapest hire costs the most. Didn’t know you don’t sign the bigger lease just because the month was good. Didn’t know that pouring money into ads doesn’t fix a product nobody wants. Didn’t know the client who haggles hardest on day one is the one who pays slowest on day ninety. He learned all of it the hard way. The expensive way.

Now he’s calling that square one? The man who can spot a bad deal from across a parking lot? Who knows exactly which corners not to cut, because he cut them once and paid for it?

He was starting again, with seven years of hard-won instinct in his back pocket. The difference doesn’t show up on a balance sheet. It shows up the next time somebody tries to sell him a bad idea and his gut says no before his brain catches up.

We talk about beginnings like they erase what came before. New job, clean slate. New city, fresh start. New year, new me. Like the move resets the meter and you walk in empty.

You don’t walk in empty. You never have.

Here’s the thing to take with you:

You’re not starting over. You’re starting again. Those aren’t the same sentence.

Over means it’s gone. Wasted. Back to nothing. Again means you’ve done a version of this before, and you kept the receipts. The scar tissue. The instincts. The short list of things you will never do twice.

So whatever you’re walking into this week. The new thing. The next thing. The thing that feels like square one. Check your pockets before you call them empty.

You’ve got more in there than you think.
