For a long time, I was sure everybody else had gotten a head start that I somehow missed.
People around me are getting married, having kids, building families of their own, all of it posted on social media right in your face. LinkedIn is showing everyone getting the promotions I never got. I had a good-paying career, but that was really it. Or so I thought.
For a while, I kept score. Every announcement, every photo, I’d run the comparison and come up short. They were moving forward right on schedule, and I was still standing in the same spot. It’s a miserable little game. You can’t win it because there’s always somebody a step ahead in whatever you’re comparing.
Then at some point I stopped watching them and started looking at what was actually in my hands. Turns out I’d been walking right past most of it. That career I kept shrugging off had done more than pay me well. It put a roof over my head, and then it helped me buy another one in a different country, a place that quietly earns on its own. I had family who stood by me through the stretches that could have broken me. People who show up, people who actually care whether I’m alright. I am still here after a thing that could have taken me out and didn’t. None of it was ever on the scoreboard I’d been keeping.
I won’t tell you it all worked out on a neat schedule. It didn’t. Some of what I was waiting on showed up. Some of it still hasn’t and might not. But the second I started counting my blessings, what was actually there instead of what was missing, the comparison lost its grip. I wasn’t behind. I was just so busy watching their race, I forgot I was running my own.
Here’s the lesson: you are not behind. You made up a clock out of everybody else’s highlight reel and punished yourself for not keeping up with it, and that clock was never yours. Someone hitting their milestone early doesn’t cost you a single thing. So stop watching them and take an honest look at what’s already in your hands, because odds are you’ve been calling a jackpot a consolation prize.
Some of what you want comes when it comes, and some of it might never arrive, and you can still build a life worth having right in the middle of that. If you’re still here to read this, you’re still in it, and getting to build something that matters from right where you’re standing is not second place. Being a late bloomer was never about being behind. You were just growing on your own clock the whole time.
See you next Sunday.
